The Costa Rican geography is privileged, with a different ocean on the two opposite coasts. You can choose your be in Guanacaste Costa Rica fishing one day and on the Caribbean, blue water fishing the next morning. Either coast is a short driving distance from the capital city of San Jose you can fly in and be on the beach, fishing on the same day. The Pacific coast is divided into 3 main areas of rugged geography full of coves, inlets and bays with the Costa Rica fish moving from one area to the other, resulting in year round activity. Offshore or inshore fishing, there are fishing boats, charters and sportsman’s lodges or camps available for your stay in nearby areas. Here you’ll find Black or Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Dorado, Wahoo and Roosterfish. On the Caribbean, Barra del Colorado, Tortuguero and Parismina are the main fishing ports in this Snook and Tarpon rich area, and you’ll be able to spot crocodiles along the canals and riverways, well fed by this bounty of nature. Live the Costa Rica dream, fishing till you drop. You’ll be able to hook the acrobatic Tarpon just outside the river mouths near inlets and coastal lagoons, where, when the weather is right, schools of leaping tarpon can spread for acres in every direction. Reeling in a Tarpon will possibly turn out to be the most dramatic catch in your trip. But Costa Rica isn’t just ocean fishing, on Lake Arenal you’ll be able to seek the Machaca, Mojarra, or fish for the famous Guapote (the handsome one), trying to beat local fishing records. For fresh water fishermen will be hard pressed to find something better than a half day tour in the lake at the base of the active Arenal Volcano The day tour includes snacks, drinks and available fly or bait fishing gear and equipment as well as guides. Get your fishing fix and then spend the evening soaking at the hot springs while you enjoy a relaxing tropical drink at the wet bar.

For many years, a month by month chart has been used as a sportsmen’s guide for fishing, but in the past few years, these fishing reports have become more unpredictable as the world’s weather patterns change. Please use the following as a rough guide for seasonal fishing information, but remember that action varies according to weather patterns. The Caribbean has a year round season for Snook and Tarpon, the best months are between December and May. In the Pacific, Marlin is found year round and peaks November to March in the North Pacific, October through November in the Central Pacific, and August through December in the Southern Pacific. Sailfish is year round as well, peaking May-august in the North, Mid December to April in the Central Pacific and August or September through March in the South. Tuna in the north is the one constant, found sometimes at over 350 lb 30 minutes from the beaches. In the Central Pacific they peak June to September, a dozen or so topping the scales at more than 200lb, and in the South, their best season is August to December. Dorado or dolphin fish is plentiful May through October after the seasonal rains in the Pacific. Wahoo can be found around rocky points and islands peaking in July and August, mostly in the North Pacific. Roosterfish is bountiful from October through March, peaking June through early September. The south is famous for its rooster fish, which can be caught nearing 100 lb year round. Snook is also found among the river mouths in the Central Pacific, the best months being July through November during the heavy rainy season and the season extending until February in the south. With yearly fly fishing record benders and breakers, which angler wouldn’t wish to be part of the bonanza?
